In America, we often take our 1st amendment rights to freedom of speech and freedom of religion for granted. It is shocking to learn that in the modern democratic nation of Japan such religious freedoms are being violated every day, with the knowledge, and even support, of representatives of the Japanese government.
Sadly, Chris Antal's article in the Journal of Unification Studies, "Forcible ‘Deprogramming,' the Japanese State, and International Human Rights," written in 2003, is still applicable today.
