The work, and tragic death of Lee Shapiro, UTS class of 1978, is gaining international attention through a documentary now being screened as part of the Tribeca Film Festival.

For Lee Shapiro, UTS helped provide a moral vision for his film-making career. His films including exposing the criminality of kidnapping and holding captive members of new religions in America, the mistreatment of the native population by the Sandinistas, and, finally, the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, a project for which he sacrificed his life.

Lee's story is one of more and more in which journalists are murdered. A new documentary, "Shadow of Afghanistan," brings this story to light, and it uses footage shot by Lee and his partner, Jim Lindelof, in Afghanistan.

Suzanne Bauman, one of the two filmmakers who produced “Shadow of Afghanistan,” stated in a recent interview, "We'd become even more committed to the story in 1987, when we'd learned that Lee Shapiro, the New York filmmaker, was killed in action. We joined forces with his group to finish the project. We've felt Lee's spirit urging us to finish the work."
